Let’s face it, nobody thinks Kanye West is more important than Kanye West himself. It should also come as no surprise that Kanye once again acted out, or that he seems to have no manners at all. He loves Beyoncé, I get it, she’s a force. He has probably never listened to Beck, I get it. Kanye West is a musical genius, I get it.
Here is where my problem with Kanye is. His bulldozing actions can seem to edge on the side of racism. “George Bush hates black people.” This type of careless statement seems to echo throughout his career. The problem is it takes away from his talent. Maybe he does not even care, maybe he’s to busy laying out Kim’s wardrobe for the next day, maybe he is masterminding his next insolent comment towards his next artist. Maybe.
When he interrupted Taylor Swift at the Video Music Awards, I thought it was such a callous move on his behalf, he stole a moment from someone who he deemed to be powerless, a frail thin framed country singer who writes about heartache, he had probably never listened to. I get it. However, the question I would like to pose is why did he not interrupt Common or John Legend. Why did he not go up and grab the microphone out of Jay-Z’s hand? Possibly respect? Fear? I get it.
Beck has been around longer than Kanye or Beyoncé for that matter. Yet he chose to make statements demeaning him. Where are his slanderous words for Lil’ Wayne or talentless meanderings about Chris Brown? Possibly respect? I get it.
Respect earned Paul McCartney the opportunity to keep up with the Kardashian, and he thought Madonna worthy enough to work on some songs. He also just extended an olive branch to collaborate with Taylor Swift, the frail, thin framed country singer who writes about heartache, and just happened to save his industry this year. She chose to do it, he probably apologized. I get it.
So what is my point? It is this. Pick on somebody your own size. Beyoncé is a grown woman, she wrote a song about it. She does not need you defending her talent. If you don’t like award shows, don’t go to them. Stop using them as a platform to showcase your ignorance of a genre of music that is not your own. Use your insane talent to speak volumes above your insane judgment.
Then again what do I know, I’m irrelevant in your world. I get it.
